I've studied the muffler and short of a cutting device of some kind, the baffle cannot be removed. I tried drilling out the rivets, it didn't make a hoot of difference. What I've ended up with is posted way down the forum. Used a Highway Hawk drag pipe cut off and attached a HD muffler(with a 1/2 hole punched in the baffle) to it. Has a great sound, looks good and I happy with the performance. My 96 has the plastic spacer in as the Anchorage AK dealer tech changed the idle and low speed jet shortly after I purchased the bike used. They had rejetted for the orginal owner and the jets were way oversized. It is great now, no backfire, responds to the idle mixture adjustment screw, and mileage is 55MPG.
